Broiler Chicken Farming 101: How to Raise Healthy Chickens for Profit

Broiler farming is one of the most popular agribusiness ventures in Malawi. With fast growth rates, low startup costs, and high market demand, broilers offer an excellent opportunity for both rural and urban farmers to earn income and improve food security.

What Are Broilers?

Broilers are chickens raised specifically for meat. They grow rapidly and are ready for market in just 5–6 weeks with proper care.

1. Housing for Broilers

Broilers need clean, warm, and well-ventilated housing. You can use:

  • Deep litter systems with sawdust or rice husks

  • Chicken wire mesh and iron sheet structures

  • Proper lighting (especially in the first 2 weeks)

  • Enough space (minimum 1 sq ft per bird)

Keep housing dry and free from strong winds to prevent respiratory issues.

 2. Feeding Schedule

Feeding accounts for over 70% of your production costs. Stick to this routine:

  • Starter feed (Week 1–2)

  • Grower feed (Week 3–4)

  • Finisher feed (Week 5–6)

Provide clean water at all times, using nipple or bell drinkers to avoid contamination. Add vitamins and electrolytes during hot weather or after vaccination.

 3. Vaccination Program

Vaccinations protect your birds from deadly diseases like Newcastle and Gumboro. A typical schedule includes:

  • Day 1: Marek’s disease (at hatchery)

  • Day 7: Newcastle + Gumboro (oral)

  • Day 14: Booster shots

Always consult a vet or extension officer for local guidance.

 4. Brooding & Heat Management

In the first 2 weeks, chicks need warmth and protection. Use heat lamps, charcoal pots, or brooder stoves. Watch for signs:

  • Chicks huddling = too cold

  • Chicks spreading = too hot

  • Even distribution = just right

 5. Marketing Your Broilers

Sell birds when they reach 1.8–2.2kg. Explore:

  • Local markets (Nsundwe, Lizulu, rural centers)

  • Schools and church events

  • WhatsApp groups and Facebook pages

  • Farm gate sales to neighbors

You can sell live or dressed birds depending on your market.

✅ Tips for Success:

  • Clean feeders and drinkers daily

  • Keep records of mortality, feed use, and sales

  • Avoid overcrowding

  • Start with 100–300 birds to manage learning curve

Broiler farming can be highly profitable when done right. With discipline and good planning, you can grow from backyard to bulk supplier in a few cycles.
